How to run your own UX audit in 6 steps

Auditing the UX of your website is a structured project. Here is a complete methodology, combining the best of the analytical, behavioral and ergonomic approaches.

1. Define the objective and the scope

First of all, clarify what you want to evaluate. Do you want to audit the whole site? Only the checkout funnel? A new feature? A specific landing page? Scoping the work lets you focus your effort and get more precise results. Also identify the resources you need: budget, time, tools and skills (in-house or external).

2. Identify the main user journeys

Map the most important paths your users take to reach their goals (for example: find a product and buy it, request a quote, subscribe to a newsletter). Each journey should be tied to a target persona. This step is crucial for prioritizing the pages and features to analyze. 3. Run a quantitative and behavioral analysis

This is where you work through the data to understand the "what" and the "how".

Quantitative analysis: make your data talk

Open your analytics tool (for example Google Analytics 4) and examine the KPIs that reveal user experience problems. Break the data down by device type (desktop vs mobile), traffic source and journey.

These five are the ones worth checking first. Each has a threshold above or below which the cause is usually the interface rather than the traffic.

  • Bounce rate above 60%. The page is not delivering what the visitor expected from the link they clicked, or it is too slow to load. Segment by traffic source before blaming the design.
  • Cart or form abandonment above 70%. Look for hidden costs appearing late, a required account creation step, or missing payment options. Baymard puts the documented average at roughly 70%, so above that you have a specific problem, not an industry problem.
  • Average engaged session under 10 seconds. Either the content is irrelevant to that audience or the navigation gives no obvious next step.
  • Conversion rate under 0.5% on a page built to convert. Usually an unclear value proposition or a CTA the eye never lands on.
  • Form completion under 10% of form starts. People are beginning and giving up, which points at field count, an unexplained required field, or validation that rejects legitimate input.
  • Rage clicks and dead clicks, from Clarity or Hotjar. Not a rate, but the fastest single signal: it shows you exactly where someone clicked something that did not respond.
  • Core Web Vitals, specifically INP above 200ms and LCP above 2.5s. Slow response is experienced as a broken interface, and both are measurable in Search Console field data.

Break every one of these down by device. A site that converts fine on desktop and fails on mobile shows an acceptable blended number and hides the actual problem.

Behavioral analysis: watch your users

Use tools such as Hotjar, Mixpanel or Microsoft Clarity to visualize how users interact with your pages.

  • Heatmaps: show you where people click. Are they clicking on elements that are not clickable? Are they ignoring your main calls to action (CTAs)?
  • Scrollmaps: show how far visitors scroll. If 80% of your visitors never see the bottom of your homepage, the information there is practically invisible.
  • Session recordings: like looking over your users' shoulders. You can spot signs of frustration, back-and-forth and blockers that are invisible in analytics data.

4. Run a thorough ergonomic analysis

  1. Clarity and value proposition: does a visitor understand in under 5 seconds who you are, what you offer and why they should stay? The promise must be immediate and explicit.
  2. Navigation and structure: is navigation intuitive? Can the user find their bearings easily and reach important information in as few clicks as possible?
  3. Interface consistency (UI): are the graphic elements (buttons, icons, colors, typography) uniform across the whole site? Good design project management guarantees that consistency.
  4. Readability and visual hierarchy: is the text easy to read? Do headings stand out clearly from body copy? Does the visual structure guide the eye to what matters?

5. Synthesize the findings and formulate recommendations

UX audit, heuristic evaluation and usability testing are not the same thing

The three get used interchangeably and they answer different questions.

  • A heuristic evaluation is one input: an expert scoring the interface against a criteria list. It is fast and it finds obvious violations.
  • Usability testing is a different input: real users attempting tasks, which finds problems no criteria list predicts.
  • A UX audit is the whole exercise. It combines analytics, at least one of the two methods above, an accessibility pass, and produces a prioritized roadmap. If someone sells you a heuristic evaluation as an audit, you are getting one third of it.
